This Gentle Leader headcollar is the perfect option if you need to get a little more control of your pulling, jumping dog. The SMALL version of the Gentle Leader comes with a plastic buckle. One of our favorite things about the Gentle Leader headcollar is your ability to wean off of it in a few steps when your dog is ready! This headcollar was created by the Professional Animal Behavior Associates to be a pain-free option for dogs who need more direction than just a simple flat buckle collar. The collar comes in several different sizes and will fit a wide variety of breeds of dogs. These collars are made right here in Canada!

  • The Gentle Leader gently calms boisterous dogs of all sizes.  It is highly recommended if your dog is strong or difficult to control.
  • The neck strap fits snugly, high around the dog’s neck (below the ears).  It should fit like a belt.  The nose loop fits loosely around the muzzle, behind the corners of your dog’s mouth.  You should be able to slide the nose loop to the end of the nose, but not off of the nose.
  • Initially, have your dog wear the Gentle Leader as much as possible to help them adjust to it.
  • Remember you must supervise your dog while they are wearing the Gentle Leader.  They can get it off & chew it if you’re not watching them.
  • It is important that your dog associates the Gentle Leader with positive things.  Be sure to do fun things with them while they are wearing the Gentle Leader, such as feeding them their dinner, giving them treats, throwing a toy for them to retrieve, or having snuggle time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Gentle Leader a muzzle?
No, the Gentle Leader is not a muzzle and it does not constrict your dog's jaw movement. It is designed with two loops: a neck strap that sits high and snugly at the base of the skull, and a nose loop that fits loosely behind the corners of the mouth. This setup gives your dog a full range of motion, allowing them to freely open and close their mouth to pant, drink, eat treats, or even play tug and fetch while wearing it
Will my dog have to wear the Gentle Leader forever?
Not at all! A very common misconception is that the Gentle Leader is a permanent piece of equipment, but it is actually designed so you can wean your dog off of it once they learn to walk calmly. When your dog is successfully walking with a loose leash, you can simply slide the nose loop off their snout and clip it back onto the collar underneath their chin. This allows you to walk them using just the high neck collar, and you can easily slip the nose loop back on if they enter a highly stimulating environment and need extra direction.
What should I do if my dog hates it and keeps pawing at it or rubbing their face on the ground?
It is completely normal for dogs to paw at the Gentle Leader at first if they haven't been slowly acclimated to it. To get your dog to accept the headcollar, you must build a positive association by having them wear it during their favorite activities, such as eating their meals, enjoying a peanut butter Kong, or playing with high-value toys. Start by simply holding a treat through the nose loop to lure their snout in, leaving it on for very short periods. If they do start fussing or pawing, gently lift up on the leash to apply a little bit of pressure, and the moment they stop, immediately let the leash hang loose again. Finally, when you take the Gentle Leader off, do not praise your dog—you want them to learn that all the fun and positive interaction only happens while the collar is on.
