Frequently asked questions

  • A puppy house line is a 5-foot (152 cm) indoor training line made of lightweight nylon or cotton web. While it functions similarly to a leash, the critical difference is that the handle or loop at the end is cut off. This essential safety feature prevents the line from getting caught or snagged on furniture while your puppy is dragging it freely around the house. It acts as a remote management tool to give you "extra-long arms" to stop bad behaviors like jumping or stealing socks before they escalate.

  • You can begin using the house line the very first day you bring your new puppy home. For the training to be effective, the house line must be attached to your puppy's collar 100% of the time they are out of their crate. Taking it on and off turns it into an exciting novelty, which often encourages the puppy to chew on it. You can safely stop using the house line only when your puppy is reliably responding to your verbal commands, and you can no longer remember the last time you had to step on the line to redirect a bad choice.

  • Because it is a new object hanging near their face, it is entirely normal for puppies to mistake the line for a tug toy initially. However, you must actively supervise your puppy and consistently interrupt this behavior the moment it starts. To stop the chewing:

    • Use a clear verbal reprimand (like "Ah-ah" or "Leave it").
    • Calmly take hold of their collar and remove the line from their mouth.
    • Do not immediately hand them a treat or bone, as smart puppies will quickly learn that chewing the line earns them a free reward.
    • Instead, engage them and ask for a small amount of effort, like offering a "sit". Once they make a good choice, then you can reward them and redirect them to an appropriate chew toy
